Snejanka Cave

Snejanka Cave (Snow White) is a small cave, but it is highly rich in speleothems. It is named after a stalagmite in the “Magic Hall”, which is snow white and resembles a woman’s figure. However, the speleothems are not really white, but in fact yellow, brown or blueish. At the entrance enormous stalagmites dominate, later the ceiling is covered by soda straws, some pilar like stalagmites are of extraordinary beauty. Some 10 to 20 cm long curtains in the last chamber sound when they are hit gently. But visitors are recommended against doing this themselves.
A Thracian tribe lived in the cave. Its remains consist bones, pieces of earthenware and a bronze needle. Excavation work took place in the floor of the Big Hall, soon after the cave was discovered officially in 1961.

The cave can be reached through the town of Peshtera. Snejanka Cave is only 5 km from the town, on the left bank of the Novomahalenska River. A convenient path leads to the entrance of the cave. The cave is 145 m long, but it has preserved so far the beauty of about 800 000 stalactites and stalagmites.
Snezhanka lies at 380 m above the river bed of one of the tributaries of Stara Reka (Novomahalenska). The cave was discovered in 1961, while its entrance is hidden among a centuries old beech grove. The cave is small in size but exceptionally beautiful, with its most wonderful sight which is the Hall of the Udders, named this way for its white-coloured ceiling and stalactites.
Hiking in the area is a popular activity among the visitors and tourists, as well as biking, mountaineering, climbing, etc.
