Rhodope Mountains

The Rhodopes (also spelled Rodopi) are a mountain range, with over 83% of its area in southern Bulgaria and the rest of it in Greece. Its highest peak, Golyam Perelik (2,191 m), is the seventh highest in Bulgaria. What’s most compelling are the karst areas with their deep river gorges, large caves and specific sculptured forms such as the Trigrad Gorge, the caves Devil's Throat, Uhlovitsa, Yagodinska, the Wonderful Bridges. To the west, they are replaced by the higher Pirin and Rila ranges.
The Rhodopes consists of many mountains scattered in the South-East of Bulgaria. Unexplored pine forests, many rivers and extraordinary rock figures are characteristic of this mountain. The main road passes by way of several middle-height peaks, a number of unique natural phenomena, small villages, old roman roads, and cultural monuments.

The Rhodope Mountains are some of the oldest mountains in Bulgaria, and is composed by many rocks of different kinds. The tuff in the Eastern Rhodopes has created strange natural sculptures - mushrooms, pyramids, etc. The mountain had not undergone a glacier period so typical glacier forms are not created.
The Rhodope Mountains do not have a clearly outlined orthographic skeleton. They are a huge labyrinth of hills of different length, height and direction, divided by deep river valleys. The mountain has left an imprint on the history of Bulgarian nation.
The mountain offers perfect conditions for hiking tourism, biking, skiing in the winter, and other activities among the nature of the Rhodopes. It is highly suitable for mountaineering and climbing as well.
