Mesta River
Mesta or Nestos(Greek) is a river flowing in both Bulgaria and Greece. The Mesta River begins from Rila Mountain and flows into the Gulf of Tessalonski in Aegean Sea near the island Thasos. The length of the river is 230 km. It forms some of the gorges in Rila and Pirin. Its longest tributary is the Dospat River. The banks of the river are covered mainly with deciduous trees that expand into halfway between Bugaria and Greece where it forms the today's boundary with Macedonia (Greece) and Thrace as well as the Kavala and the Xsanthi prefectures. The Mesta river later forms into a delta to the north where it expands into swamplands, wetlands and a lagoon which once existed except in the east.
The fishpond by the Mesta River (3 km along a highway and 2 km along a dirt road northeastwards) offers tourist attractions and a specialized fish restaurant. Therefore the Mesta River is very suitable for fishing tourism, relaxation, hunting, and other activities in this peaceful Bulgarian nature. The waters of Mesta River are highly rich in fish.
The nature in the area around the Mesta river is pure and preserved, offering visitors and tourists to savour their rest in the country.
