Veleka River
The Veleka river springs from a region in Turkey, which is near the Bulgarian-Turkish border. The Veleka river meanders through the yet unexplored nature of the Strandja mountain before joining the Black Sea. The mouth of Veleka river is particularly beautiful for the way the river sinks underground to flow into the sea beneath a relatively wide strip of sand. The mouth of Veleka is only 4 km south of Ahtopol and at the very northern end of the village of Sinemoretz.
The Veleka river is one of the most romantic and ecologically clean rivers of the country. The mist over it in the early hours of the morning is a magnifiscent sight. Veleka is an inseparable part of the Strandja natural park and is one of the main charms of the region, along with the Rezovska river. The mountain was declared a natural park in 1995 (in fact it is the largest one in Bulgaria) and is one of the least explored in Bulgaria. This explains why the richness of its wildlife is so preserved. The mountain also has a lot of caves (particularly in its western part), findings of ancient civilizations (such as stone figures, sun discs carved in stone, Thracian dolmens, fortress walls, protobulgarian sanctuaries, etc).
The Veleka River is also suitable for fishing tourism, relaxation, biking, hunting, and other activities in this peaceful Bulgarian nature. The many opportunites the fishing tourisms offers to visitors in the area around the Veleka River helps the tourists to enjoy the beautiful natural surrounding, fresh air and silence. Its waters are highly rich in fish.
